PHOENIX A-cappella Showcase Chorus
How
it all began ...
In 1978 six ladies in Potton decided to get together and form a singing
group. No-one could have imagined it would grow into the 60+ strong,
nationally renowned, award-winning chorus that is PHOENIX!
...
the road(s) taken!
Appearances include Canada and the USA, and nearer to home in Holland
(and we're going again in 2005!), the Royal Albert Hall, the Barbican,
the Birmingham Conservatoire and appearances on regional and national
TV.
Directed by Lynda Wood, Phoenix is the current 2004 LABBS Champion
Chorus - first winning the title in 2001 - finalists in Sainsbury's
Choir of the Year 2002 competition, National and International Entertainers
of the Year and have appeared at every LABBS Convention for the past
26 years.
Our members travel long distances to attend rehearsals – from
as far afield as Peterborough, Harlow, Derbyshire, Northamptonshire
and Yorkshire! Many occupations and professions are represented in
the chorus – nurses, teachers, police officers, solicitors and
housewives are just a few.
The Spirit of Phoenix
The members of Phoenix enjoy singing purely for the pleasure of entertaining
as well as exercising these skills in competitions. We will burst into
song whenever we get the opportunity – anytime, anyplace, anywhere
is a good maxim for us.
Each year we support a charity – this year's is the Friends of
the Phoenix Centre. The Phoenix Centre is based in Cambridge and helps
young people with eating disorders.
Rehearsals
We rehearse every Tuesday evening at Potton Lower School. Visitors
are very welcome just to "observe and enjoy" or to see
whether you would like to try four-part harmony singing. For more
information talk to any Phoenix member or visit our website.
Potton
Barbershop Harmony Club
Together Phoenix and Shannon Express form Potton Barbershop Harmony
Club. Shannon Express is the award-winning male chorus, meeting at
the school on Thursday evenings. Both choruses are very supportive
of each other and enjoy this special relationship.
