IT'S A PHOENIX GOLDRUSH!
IT'S A PHOENIX GOLDRUSH!
Phoenix Ladies Harmony Chorus from Potton struck gold again at last weekend's
Ladies Association of Barbershop Singers annual convention in Harrogate. Like
the Olympics, the gold collection started on the first day with the quartet Finesse
winning gold and continued the next day with Phoenix winning the 37 chorus strong
competition.
Singing a ballad, Come Take Your Place, and a tempo song, Alexander's Ragtime
Band, Phoenix not only won the competition but they swept the board by winning
each of the category trophies for music, singing and presentation. Added to this,
their score of 81.8% grades them in the top "A" grade (this is thought
to be the highest percentage in the competition to date) – a huge achievement
for the chorus led by musical director Lynda Wood.
Phoenix was well represented in the quartet competition. In addition to Finesse
(two members, Debbie Clarke and Tanya Jenkins, are from Phoenix), quartets Rapport
(Lynda Wood, Nicky Salt, Glenis Todd and Jane Fielding) and Cadenza (Helen Burnett,
Sue Armstrong-Brown, Louise Bainbridge and Diane Lloyd) performed well finishing
fourth and seventh respectively. Cadenza was awarded the Novice Trophy for their
first competition performance.
However, there is little time for basking in the glow of the gold medals as Phoenix
will be preparing for pre-Christmas show. Tickets for Phoenix and Friends on
Tuesday 7 December at Burgoyne School, Mill Lane, Potton are on sale now at £2
each ring 01234 764721 for more information. Proceeds from the evening will be
donated to our supported charity The Friends of the Phoenix Centre, an eating
disorder centre in Cambridge.
